1. A quality computer is necessary for all DJs. Pick out a Mac – the most expensive one you can afford. Macs are built for DJs and graphics-heavy users. Plus, they just sound really good.
2. Your turntable is going to be an expensive investment. It’s for playing vinyls. Go for a direct-drive turntable, which have the best torque and power. It should also have a USB port so you can easily move songs from the vinyl record to your computer, which should be a Mac. Don’t forget to pick up a couple of DJ slip mats, which shouldn’t cost you more than $50. You can also make your own out of felt.
3. DJ cartridges might already come with your turntable, but you’ll need them if they don’t. They cost around $150. A DJ mixer, which costs around $300, is a must-have as well.
4. Headphones are another tool you need to have. You can spend anywhere from $20 to $500, so choose the features you need. It should be lightweight and comfortable for long periods of use.
5. Highly-rated DJ software for your computer is very important. The best ones are VirtualDJ, Traktor Pro, and AtomixMP3. You can download these programs online after paying for them.
6. Don’t forget to buy cables to hook everything up! Your computer and turntables should come with some cables, but you can also purchase cable kits that have universal ends to fit a variety of ports.

You might be able to find inexpensive DJ equipment on websites like eBay or Craigslist. Just watch out for spammers or scammers. If it sounds too good to be true, it just might be, especially on these websites. Other venues might include pawnshops or outlet stores. If you’re ordering online, try to find a coupon code for the website. Remember that you get what you pay for, so don’t scrimp on quality to save a few dollars. High-end equipment will last you a long time and sound excellent in outdoor or indoor parties. If you don’t have all the cash upfront, try to get a small business loan or personal loan from your bank or credit union. Use a credit card as a last resort, but have a plan for paying it off soon.
