Selecting A Kegerator by Allaric Saltzman
In olden days when there were parties organized the scene of tipping the cup at an angle,
kneeling down below the keg s lid, or finding a friend to pump the tap while they poured was seen where
kegs in general tended to be a difficult beast to control. They were unreliable, tricky to keep at a good
temperature and difficult to maintain over the course of evening. Here is were the Kegerators entered
the scene.
A Kegerator is a type of refrigerator that has been made or modified to hold one or more kegs
of draft beer. Far more advanced than a bucket full of ice, a kegerator will keep a keg of beer at an even
cool temperature until the last drop, allowing you to store your beer for up to two months without losing
the fresh draft taste. If you are considering of buying a kegerator, there are a few things you should
consider first.
1 ) Make a decision if you would like to purchase a kegerator kit and modify an existing
refrigerator. Any working refrigerator that can hold a keg of beer can be transformed into a kegerator
with the taps outside the door. Kits are far less expensive than pre-made kegerators; however, assembling
does require time, patience and expertise.
2 ) Choosing the right size kegerator. If you don’t drink a lot of beer very often, then a mini keg
& kegerator might be the best solution.
3 ) Decide where you would like to place your kegerator before shopping. For a hidden under
the counter style kegerator take measurements of your space to ensure a proper fit. For difficult spaces,
some manufacturers build a kegerator to your specific needs. Make sure the doors are reversible.
If you have to move it and you find yourself putting it in an area against a wall or in some place where
opening is difficult one way, having a reversible door is pretty important.
4 ) Available in virtually any color and even in stainless steel, your kegerator is functional,
but it can also be decorative. Match your home decor when purchasing your new kegerator.
5 ) There are two tower kegerators that hold two kegs in the cooler. There are kegerator
refrigerator combinations that hold a keg on one side and milk, eggs and soda on the
other side. You d be surprised at the sheer magnitude of choices.
6 ) Also the important part is budget, how much you will spend on a kegerator.
Kegerators are pretty important for the complete home bar. But, there comes a time when
you want the look of a professional home bar so make sure you choose the ones that are right for you.
